The jacking around continued, however. From attempting to charge keepers for mail delivery to refusing to respond to material requests in a timely manner, the Department of Marine failed to consider the human element of life on the Sisters. They knew families with children wouldn’t go near the place; they also knew that the bachelor lifestyle of the men they were able to employ would relegate the place to vermin-infested ruin. If storms continually splintered the longboats, demolished the boathouses, and tore away at the structure of the keeper’s dwelling, it was Ottawa’s neglect of those who served at the Sisters that finally brought the station to its knees.

In 1967, Ottawa was forced to tear down what was left of earlier structures and construct a reinforced-concrete tower, a new foghorn building, and new living quarters replete with electricity and a helipad. Keepers would work for the next twenty-five years in guaranteed short-term postings of two weeks on and two weeks off. In 1996, the Sisters Lighthouse was de-staffed completely, its buildings boarded up and closed. The site is off limits to the public today, and it is being considered for demolition due to vandalism. Before it’s gone forever, lighthouse aficionados ought to get close enough to snap that elusive picture.
